Abstract

Gingival fibroblasts of a mongreal dog were cultured on bioglass surfaces (45S5) bioglass and 52S bioglass) which are surface active bioceramics, and on polystyrene culture dish as a negative control in order to investigate collagen fiber
production.
Each specimens of 5, 10, 20 days culture were examined by a scanning electron microscope to show the attachment of fibroblasts and the production of collagen fibers. The structure of incorporated collagen and hydroxyapatite crystal on bioglass
surfaces
were observed by SEM after removing fibroblasts from the specimens. The ultrastructure of fibroblasts-bioglass interface of the 30-day specimen was observed using a light microscope and a transmitted electron microscope.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1. In early stage of culture, more well-developed filopodia and lamellipodia of fibroblast were found on 52S bioglass than those on 45S5 bioglass. However, two groups did not show any significant difference in later stage.
2. The collagen fiber produced by fibroblasts on the negative control and on 52S bioglass were observed in early stage of culture. On the contrary those were found after 20, 30 days culture on 45S5 bioglass.
3. The morphology of mesh-work collagen fiber and hemispherical hydroxyapatite crystal was similar on 52S bioglass and 45S5 bioglass.
4. The thick and irregular reaction layer was formed on the surface of bioglass.
